2. Harbershuus
Since I started to study the family Harbers, ie 1950, I have questioned myself whether our ancestors in Haaksbergen originate from Haaksbergen or originate from Eibergen. I can not answer this question. The only way to do this is, is through the civil rights procedures. In those days, court knew criminal law and civil law. Our present office of notary originates from the French time and is a substitution of the civil laws.
It can also be possible that the ancestors from Eibergen and Haaksbergen are two different families, since the name Harbers is a patronym. For Harbers the family name comes from the first name Herbert. The letter s was added to Herbert: Herberts. In my research, I came across a total of 6 different notations: Herberts, Harbertz, Herbarts, Harpers, Herbers and Harbers. After 1800, the name Harbers is the only one used.
Our oldest known ancestors lived "in urban Eibergen". The Harbershuus was located on the edge of urban Eibergen. The old blacksmith, that we know from our youth as blacksmith Bart Bomers, had to be located just outside the town-gate for fire safety reasons. You only had to cross the street to get to the Harbershuus from the blacksmith's shop. So our ancestors lived in urban Eibergen within the town-gate. The Harbershuus was located at de Grotestraat, the lively heart of Eibergen in the old days. (This is moved to the Hagen in 1990). Harbershuus was located where we now find hotel de Klok.
An old picture of Tuinderlaagte in Eibergen. On the left in the back was Zwikkelaarsweide. Here Excelsior and Euphonia gave muscial performences. Now after rebuilding it became Zwikkelaarsplein. On the right you see St. Jozef school. The church was the previous Catholic church of Eibergen which was turned down in 1935. Blacksmith Bart Bomers is the building in the middle of the picture. The slightly taller building was the house of doctor Sigismund Ellerbeck. Hotel the Klok can not be seen in this picture but it is located in front of the church.
